Terms of Use

This site is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis for informational purposes only. The management of onpoli.ca makes no representations or warranties of any kind, express or implied, as to the site’s operation or the information, content or materials included on this site. To the full extent permissible by applicable law, onpoli.ca hereby disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for any particular purpose. Onpoli.ca will not be liable for any damages of any kind arising from the use of or inability to use this site. You expressly agree that you use this site solely at your own risk.

The submission of comments is encouraged and registered users may be promoted to allow the contribution of more substantial submissions including access to the front page. But material deemed to be libelous, to carry with it other forms of legal liability or to be offensive without any redeeming value will be deleted at the sole discretion of the management.

Donations and Refunds

Donations to help pay for the costs of running the site are gratefully received. Please see the Tip Jar heading on the sidebar at right. Please be sure of your intention to donate because requests for refunds will not be honoured.

Information Collected and Privacy Policy

The IP addresses of all visitors are captured just as they are on virtually every website in the known universe. In this case, the addresses are recorded in both the server logs and in the software’s built in access logs.

This site uses “cookies” which are small text files deposited on users’ hard drives. While they can also be used for other purposes, on this site they’re used for session management and primarily to require only a single login from registered users rather than constantly pestering them for passwords.

An anonymous commenter will be required to supply a valid email address when submitting a comment. This address is not published. When registering an account, a new user will be required to submit a valid email address and this will only be published if the user chooses to do so.

In the case of visitors who are kind enough to make a deposit to the tip jar, the payment service passes along your real name, email address and street address along with the donation. It does not supply your credit card information — onpoli.ca never sees that information.

Unlike some sites, at onpoli.ca your email communication is regarded as a private matter by default simply because that’s the way we’d like to be treated. Emails will not be published or shared without the author’s permission.

Outside of anything the users choose to share, the only access to all of the above information is by onpoli.ca’s administrator. None of this information will be shared with third parties without a user’s consent with the following exception: it is onpoli.ca’s policy to cooperate with law enforcement officials in the detection, investigation, and prosecution of unlawful activity. If we receive a warrant or subpoena for user information, we may disclose requested records to law enforcement authorities or outside parties seeking information through the legal process.

Use of Third Party Services

This site uses both Site Meter and Google Analytics to monitor traffic. Site Meter’s Privacy Policy is here — ignore the first section and scroll down to the part headed: General Internet User Privacy. Google’s Privacy Policy is here but that page is mainly for those who actually sign up for one or more of Google’s services. You may take some comfort from the fact that the reports provided by Analytics supply less specific information on individual visitors than even Site Meter does (and Site Meter never supplies a complete IP address).

And finally, this site currently uses PayPal to implement the aforementioned tip jar. Their privacy policy is here.

If reading all of those pages makes you nervous about the amount of information you're sharing, consider the fact that you've been doing it all along.

Copyright Complaints

At onpoli.ca we respect the intellectual property of others and require that our users do the same. If you believe that your work has been copied and is accessible on this site in a way that constitutes copyright infringement, or that your intellectual property rights have been otherwise violated, please don't hesitate to contact us -- see the next paragraph.

Inquiries about any of the above or on any other matter involving the site can be emailed to this address. As an alternative you can use the contact form (which can always be accessed using the "contact" prompt on the main menu).
